July 2017

Mary E. Vandenack and Beverly R. Branchaud, attended the 2017 Summer Institute in Taxation.  The July 17 - 19 conference took place at The Westin New York at Times Square and was held by the New York University School of Professional Studies.  Mary and Bev attended courses relating to International Taxation and State & Local Taxation.

Monte L. Schatz will be a presenter at the Estate Planning for Farmers and Ranchers Seminar which is hosted by the National Business Institute.  He will be presenting "Agricultural Use Valuation" and "Transfers Upon Death: Key Estate Administration Concerns."  The August 9, 2017 seminar will be held at the Regency Lodge in Omaha, NE.  Get your registration in and plan to join Monte at this informative seminar.  

 June 2017

The firm congratulates Mary E. Vandenack, Joshua A. Diveley, and Nick C. Meier for an impressive win before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.  The case is Raymond McGaugh v. cir, No. 16-2987. 

James S. Pieper attended a 1 Million Cups meeting, which is designed to educate, engage, and connect entrepreneurs with their communities.  This weekly meeting took place at DoSpace on June 28, 2017.

Monte L. Schatz obtained a Veterans Administration Certification.  Monte will now be able to assist Veterans before Veterans Affairs, and handle claims on behalf of military Veterans and their families.

Mary E. Vandenack attended the WCA Tribute To Women 30th Anniversary Luncheon event on June 13, 2017 with Cheri Duryea.  Mary was pleased to support her good friends and honorees, Pamela Hernandez and Joann Schaefer-Haines.

Joshua A. Diveley  was a volunteer at the 14th Annual Millard Business Community Foundation's Scholarship Golf Scramble.  This event took place at Pacific Springs Golf Course on June 12, 2017.  Proceeds are donated to the scholarship fund to provide six $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors each year.

James S. Pieper attended the Pension Council of the Midlands Seminar.  This May 25, 2017 seminar took place at the Embassy Suites Conference Center -  La Vista, and featured Brain Furgala as guest speaker.

Mary E. Vandenack attended the 2017 Law Practice Spring Meeting .  The May 24 - 27 meeting took place at The Hotel Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska. 

 Mary E. Vandenack has been appointed to the Creighton University School of Law Advisory Board. The Board is composed of outstanding alumni who advise the faculty and administration for advancement of the School of Law.

Mary E. Vandenack attended the FEI World Cup Finals as a guest of Westwood Trust Company.

Monte L. Schatz and his wife Mary Jo attended the Metro Omaha Women's Business Center Gala.  This April 1, 2017 event was held at the Omaha Marriott - Regency.  This fundraiser helps provide grants to entrepreneurial women who are starting up their own businesses.

March 2017

Monte L. Schatz attended the Certified Fundraising Management Certification Class.  This class was held at the UNO College of Public Affairs and Community Service on March 29, 2017.  Monte, along with Stacie Neussendorfer, Vice President of Westwood Trust Company presented “A Nonprofit Organization’s Endowment Under the Microscope: Investment Policy Statements as a Tool for Investment Manager Selection and Accountability”.

Michael J. Weaver and Alex B. Rainville attended the Commercial Real Estate Summit. This annual conference took place at the CenturyLink Center Omaha on March 24, 2017.

Monte L. Schatz attended the Omaha Estate Planning Council Meeting.  This March 21, 2017 lunch meeting took place at Happy Hollow Club and featured Clark B. McCleary, former president of the Society of Financial Service Providers, as guest speaker.

Monte L. Schatz attended the January Happy Hour of the Omaha Estate Planning Council.  The   January 17, 2017 reception was held at Happy Hollow Club and featured Dr. Randall Adkins, Professor of Political Science, as the guest speaker.  He shared his prediction that a Republican controlled Congress will have on the stock market, tax laws, life and health insurance, and investment portfolios.

Joshua A. Diveley, and Monte L. Schatz attended the 2016 Great Plains Federal Tax Institute in Omaha, NE.  The December 1-2nd educational sessions provided subject matter experts from around the nation.  Howard M. Zaritsky, attorney and nationally-recognized expert, lecturer, and author, gave the keynote address.  The program covered a variety of tax related issues and updates and was held at the Embassy Suites - Downtown/Old Market, Omaha, NE.

November 2016

Alex B. Rainville was appointed to the Practice and Procedures Committee for the Nebraska State Bar Association for 2017.  The Committee monitors, studies and evaluates the law and proposed laws for civil, criminal and juvenile practice and procedures in Nebraska Courts.

Alex B. Rainville, Nicholas D. Meier, and Michael J. Weaver recently attended the Omaha Bar Association’s Membership Dinner Welcoming New Attorneys.  The November 16, 2016 reception held at Champions Run featured the Honorable Joseph Bataillon, U.S. District Court, as the guest speaker.  The event allows the incoming OBA President to talk about the year ahead and serves to welcome newly admitted attorneys to the bar.  Vandenack Weaver LLC proudly welcomes Alex B. Rainville as an attorney to the firm.  Alex passed the bar in August and was previously a law clerk for the firm.  We are excited to have him on staff as an attorney!

Nicholas D. Meier attended the 2016 John M. Gradwohl Estate and Business Planning Program.  This May 12th & 13th conference was held at the University of Nebraska College of Law, McCollum Hall in Lincoln, Nebraska covering federal and state developments regarding real estate planning and business planning.

The American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law and Bloomberg BNA commended Eric W. Tiritilli for his significant contributions to the advancement of law as a contributor to "The Developing Labor Law:  The Board, the Courts, and the National Labor Relations Act, Sixth Edition, 2015 Cumulative Supplement".  Eric has been a contributing editor for this publication for several years.

Joshua A. Vandenack concluded a busy week at the ABA TechShow 2016 held March 16-19, 2016 at the Chicago Hilton.  In addition to attending conference sessions, Mary, being last year’s recipient, delivered the “History of the Award” for the James I. Keane Award at the LTRC’s State of Legal Technology Luncheon.  She and Barron Henley of Affinity Consulting Group hosted a “Taste of TECHSHOW” dinner.  Mary, along with John Stewart,  presented “Small Firms/Big Markets” under the Legal Technology 2020 track of the conference.  Check out the ABA Journal article written by reporter Victor Li .

Joshua A. Diveley attended the March Luncheon of the Omaha Estate Planning Council meeting on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.  The luncheon featured NAEPC President-Elect, Paul S. Viren, CLU, ChFC, AEP.  Mr. Viren provided an update on the happenings at the national level as well as presented, “Beneficiary Designations – How to get back at your family!”.

Joshua A. Diveley, Eric W. Tiritilli and Nicholas D. Meier attended the Medical/Legal Dinner hosted by the Omaha Bar Association on Tuesday evening, March 15, 2016.  This annual joint event brings together members of the Omaha Bar Association with members of the Metro Omaha Medical Society to better understand the challenges facing each profession.  Guest Speaker was the Douglas County Crime Scene Investigators discussing the topic: “Under the Microscope”.

She will continue to serve for the next ABA year in the role of Features Editor of the Law Practice Magazine and as a Member of the ABA Council for Youth at Risk.
